Anecdotes from previous GS Returnees
“I was eager to re-enter the workforce but wanted to explore opportunities in a different sector. When I came across the open application for the Goldman Sachs Returnship Programme, I immediately recognized it as a unique opportunity to gain experience in a prestigious international company. Despite my professional background, I was initially concerned that my lack of experience in finance might hinder my growth within the firm. However, thanks to the warm welcome and strong support from the Regulatory Reporting team in Global Banking and Markets, I was able to quickly adapt and develop a deep understanding of the role. As a result, I was offered the position of Vice President after completing the Returnship.”

“I came across the idea of a “Returnship”; an opportunity which placed value and worth on those that had opted for a career break. I was seriously impressed that Goldman Sachs had coined the term “Returnship” over sixteen years ago – and had identified strategic value in actively reintegrating those that had opted for a career break. The opportunity stood out to me, because I could trust that Goldman Sachs were frontrunners in running Returnship programmes; and I would be joining a global network of professionals that had journeyed the same path – be it in the Americas; India, or now EMEA.”

“I had worked in banking for almost 15 years, the last 10 at Goldman Sachs. When I resigned in 2014 (as my family was moving to Australia) I thought I had closed the door to that part of my career, and I pursued other interests for a decade. A decade! That is an incredibly long time, especially to be out of the financial markets. The Returnship reopened that door– it gave me an incredible opportunity to rejoin Goldman.”

“The advice I would give to anyone considering applying is to proudly tell your story, how your career break was a chapter of personal development and the valuable experiences you gathered during that time. I am a prime example that GS appreciates and values that.”

“The Returnship program was the perfect way for me to get back to work after a number of years away from practice. I was supported, provided with needed training, and given responsibility and an opportunity to excel. My prior experiences were valued, including those gained during the years away from corporate practice. I now get to work with smart people on interesting transactions doing a job I love, and it all started the day I decided to apply to the Returnship program!”

“The Returnship program gave my entire family the grace we needed for me to reestablish myself in the corporate world. The team I was assigned to curated opportunities that leveraged my background and skillset setting me up for long-term success. The leaders of the program and my colleagues in the cohort were mutually supportive and some turned into long-term friendships. I was promoted to Vice President 9 months after the Returnship ended – an unlikely experience if I re-entered the workforce without the support of this program.”
